GENEVE -LONDON ???
SANTILLANA - PARISClass: 15-20 4th ESO students , working in groups of 3. They are lower intermediate students.
Objectives : Using English as a way to get to know things they might be interested in ( their year -end trip)
TimeScale: 1 hour a week for the two first terms (The decission should have already been taken by the beginning of the last term.)Stages: Given that students already have 4 possible destinations for their year -end trip. In fact, the school management lets them choose between Italy, Switzerland, France or Northern Spain.
. Deciding on one destination: In 3s, ss agree on which of the four possible destinations they feel most attracted to and therefore wouldn't mind doing some research on it ( All four destinations must have at least one group working on it, though I know Northern Spain will never be number one in the list)
.Brainstorming : Teacher tries to pool everything ss know about the destinations. As Tom suggested, we could work with two "columns": facts and "things we're not certain about"...The more you get in that second column, the better. The group , then ,writes questions about the gaps they have E.g What time do shops close in Italy, France. How much is a coke there'... What is there worth to be seen in Florence, Paris...? (Tell ss to save the questions on a Word document)
.Reaching consensus: As to what the class as a single group wants to know about the different countries. That would imply choosing some of the questions and rejecting others. It is important that all the groups try to focus their research on the same aspects( not to have pp presentations showing the " interesting aspects of a country " : nightlife, theme parks.... and others the " boring ones" : museums, cathedrals....This would obviously affect the final election)
.Searching for the answers; Give students a number of websites and tell them to look up for the answers.Tell them to answer the questions on the same Word document used in the second stage.
Power Point Presenting: Tell the groups to make a PP presentation each with all the information and interesting pictures they have gathered so as to convince the other groups about the pros and cons of voting for their country.( Such presentations should answer the questions the class agreed on- so as to avoid copying and pasting)
Feedback : Make students answer sort of a survey about the aspects they value the most /least from all the destinations and vote for a country, and here it goes, this is where our 4th ESo ss are to for their trip.
(Tom insists that I could you a blog for the project but I don't feel confident enough yet.)
Technolgy required:
PCs with Internet Connection. Word. A LCD projector for the Pps presentations.
